Gail,
My students loved the chance to share their poetry with you yesterday at State Street. I will be in Orlando, too, doing a session on Wed. am all about my poetry approach and program. Heading to NYSRA soon, too. Maybe I will see you in Orlando. My students write poetry as well as recite it. I have found they do it as easily as breathing. I teach it with no pressure, homework or testing. If you go to youtube and type in my name and poetry on parade you can see a 3 min clip from one of our recitals.
I try to turn them into lovers of words and ideas; captivating them so that they, too, will not be able to resist those cold and delicious plums they will encounter throughout life.
The author visit always seems too short; that is why we did the Frost poem for you. The children understand it and love that one. I for one enjoy your fairy tales that look at it all so realistically. It's a nice way to balance the hope found in traditional tales with the realism of life as we know it.
By the way when I saw Solomon today in the hall I asked which poem he had done for you and he told me "Growing Up" because it seemed sort of mythical to him. He is quite something that boy; he has the heart of an artist.
I like everything about our visiting authors: the anticipation, the in-depth study, the visit and then afterward when that connection pushes us to learn and read even more. Many thanks for your visit and I hope you did not encounter even one snowflake on your ride home. We recite de la Mare's "The Snowflake" to make ourselves feel better. Do you know it? I am originally from Long Island and all relatives are there and in Westchester, but I am a true up-stater now.
Sincerely,
Janet

I am addicted to your books!
And I've only read 3 of your books!
I'm age 11 and my school only has 3 of your books, so I'm trying to go to the library as much as possible!
Right now I'm reading Ever and I LOVE IT!!!
One thing I don't like is how disney did Ella Enchanted. They changed it way too much! They should have just stayed to the book.
Janet Fagal--I enjoyed the YouTube performance, and I loved hearing your students recite! Hope to see you in Orlando.
